Every weekend sees tens of thousands of enthusiastic people – singles and families and their friends – throughout the country on the banks of our rivers and dams, all with fishing rods in rests and lines with baited hooks cast into the water. For thousands it is a way of life, the world’s largest participatory outdoor activity, namely freshwater bank angling. It is practiced by men, women and children of all ages and is indeed the most family orientated facet of recreational fishing. It is a conservation-minded, multi-species facet, targeting all the fishes that occur in southern Africa. Bank anglers represent the largest cross-section of society of the angling disciplines – you may see a tent pitched next to a caravan, or a single cab bakkie parked next to a SUV. Educated, full time employed, married with school going children, annual vacations, camping and caravans preferred, best describes this sector. For more visit www.foranglers.co.za

Stywe Lyne – Tight Lines Magazine is the longest running angling publication in South Africa; established in 1960 it became an institution in the local angling industry with the title even used to describe well wishes for a good day’s angling. It is a bilingual (English/Afrikaans) multi-species, multi-facet publication covering all aspects of fishing in saltwater from the beach, rocks, small craft in estuaries and harbours and offshore; in freshwater from small craft in dams and rivers, using all types of tackle and bait. Particular coverage is given to angling-based tourism such as travels to venues inside and outside our borders. For more visit www.foranglers.co.za

Bass anglers are exuberant, fun-loving people – male and female – quite happy to travel the country in search of bass fishing excitement. They are financially secure and can well afford all the equipment that this facet of recreational angling demands. Competition level and also purely social bass anglers own dedicated SUV’s to tow high-powered, dedicated bass boats fitted with modern sonar technology with hatches loaded with multiple rod and reel combinations and artificial lures designed for all the techniques of targeting and catching bass, while “Catch and Release” as a conservation measure is well established. They are well educated, own their own homes and utilize modern information technology as a matter of course. When away on fishing excursions chalet or B&B-type accommodation is used. Their obvious financial status is also reflected in clothing choices and outdoor accessories. For more visit www.foranglers.co.za

Specimen carp anglers typically spend long sessions on the bank, targeting fish in all sizes of habitats, from small to large in search of trophy-size carp. Their dream is to catch one of these monsters and improve their own PB (Personal Best) as an ongoing quest. They are passionate about what they do and invest a lot of time and money in preparing everything perfectly to maximize their success rate when targeting this one sought-after fish. Specimen anglers take great care of the natural resource and ensure that these fine specimens are released safely back to the water. They continually strive for perfection, upgrading their gear to the next level, staying abreast of trends and technology. Their extensive requirement as far as tackle is concerned translates into expenditure on larger vehicles, trailers, boats and spacious tackle rooms, tents and luggage.
